What's Included in State Minimum Car Insurance Requirement?

A state minimum car insurance requirement may include four basic types of coverage:

  • Bodily Injury Liability
  • Property Damage Liability
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
  • Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Protection

1. Bodily Injury Liability

The coverage pays for the cost associated with injuries to other people caused by you in an accident.

2. Property Damage Liability

It covers the cost of damages to someone else’s property caused by you in an accident. It covers per person and per accident.

3. Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

This covers medical expenses and in many cases, rehabilitation cost or lost wages. PIP pays for per person and per accident.

4. Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Protection

This coverage protects you and your passengers for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering in case of an accident with a driver who is at-fault and doesn’t have a liability insurance. It’s a coverage for per person and per accident.

Note: Many states normally require the first two insurances.
